Adoption of Spinal Nonfusion Technologies Doubled in One Year

WALTHAM, Mass., April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Millennium Research Group's (MRG) US Spine Marketrack(TM) results indicate that a growing number of facilities are adopting nonfusion technologies. Rising patient and surgeon awareness and new product releases starting in Q3 2007 added to this growth and will facilitate ongoing increases in the market going forward.

In Q4 2006, just over 6% of hospitals surveyed performed artificial disc procedures, but by Q4 2007, this proportion doubled to over 13%. Similarly, the number of facilities that performed dynamic stabilization treatments also doubled from 10% to 20% over the same time frame.

Products like Medtronic Spinal and Biologics' Prestige-ST and the X-STOP, Synthes Spine's ProDisc-C and ProDisc-L, DePuy Spine's Charite, and Zimmer Spine's Dynesys, as well as new devices entering the market, are experiencing growing adoption rates. Manufacturers are increasingly training surgeons on nonfusion technologies, such as artificial discs and dynamic stabilization devices, facilitating this adoption. Surgeons are finding these technologies are more in tune with the body because they preserve motion as opposed to fusion technologies, which result in reduced movement of the spine.
