AARP Media Briefing: “Doughnut Hole Rebate Checks and the New Health Care Law”

Experts available to discuss health care law and the first steps in closing the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap

PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As the new health care law continues to be implemented; one of the first tangible benefits is a $250 rebate check being mailed to people in Medicare who fall into the Part D coverage gap, or “doughnut hole.” This benefit is the first step in the closing of this expensive gap in coverage. Seniors in Pennsylvania and throughout the country will start to receive rebate checks beginning on June 10, 2010.

On June 8, AARP will be holding a tele-briefing for members of the press featuring AARP health care law experts Cheryl Matheis and David Certner. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions on the doughnut hole rebate checks, what consumers need to know about the checks, and the closing of the doughnut hole.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) notes that approximately 80,000 checks are currently scheduled to be mailed to retirees in June. AARP Pennsylvania anticipates a certain level of confusion among seniors about the eligibility requirements for receiving a rebate check. Last year, roughly 189,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Pennsylvania hit the donut hole, or gap in Medicare Part D drug coverage.

This is an important time to again inform consumers about what the doughnut hole is, who is at risk for falling in, and how you can delay or avoid falling into the doughnut hole entirely.

Following the tele-briefing I will be able to offer our national experts for one-on-interview along with providing AARP free educational tools and our special online doughnut hole calculator.

To RSVP for the tele-briefing your response will be needed by June 7th, at [email protected] or 267-825-9922
