BETHESDA, Md., June 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, the mHealth Alliance, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) seek abstracts, presentations and speakers in the areas of research, technology, business and policy for the 2011 mHealth Summit.
Presented by the FNIH in partnership with the mHealth Alliance, HIMSS and NIH, the 3rd annual mHealth Summit will take place December 5-7, 2011 in the Washington, DC area. The largest event of its kind, the mHealth Summit brings together leaders from across the mHealth ecosystem, to advance collaboration in the use of wireless technology to improve health outcomes in the United States and abroad.

Call for Research Abstracts: The 2011 mHealth Summit seeks abstracts for presentations from the academic, public and private research sectors that highlight ground-breaking health research using mobile technologies in clinical medicine and public health. Submissions can address a wide range of mobile health technologies including assessment and diagnostic tools, preventive health efforts, disease surveillance methods, chronic disease management, mobile telemedicine, and behavior change interventions. Although feasibility/usability and pilot studies of cutting-edge applications will be considered, priority will be given to presentations that provide a rigorous and well-controlled evaluation (the design of which should be described in the abstract) of the application of mobile technology to improve health. Novel research designs that utilize the rich data source available from the mobile technologies themselves are particularly encouraged. All submissions will be reviewed by the conference planning committee and may be accepted for either an oral or poster presentation.
Call for Speakers: The 2011 mHealth Summit is also seeking speakers in the areas of technology, business and policy. All submissions will be reviewed by the conference planning committee.
Technology Track: This track will include topic categories that examine the technologies being deployed today while also exploring new technologies that are currently under development. Today there is a system of 'Sick-Care' in the developed world where incentives are not aligned to encourage a healthy population but rather a system of 'No-Care' where very few have identified the attributes leading to health and wellness. To address this wide gap in health delivery, mHealth technologies will enable improved health globally and at all income levels. The mHealth technologies will also include commonalities that will allow global economies of scale to be achieved when reaching both the developed and developing worlds. Interoperability and security among mHealth technologies are imperative as these are introduced to market. In addition, ensuring consistent practices across implementation, deployment, maintenance, administration, and other aspects of technology deployment is of paramount importance.
Business Track: When exploring effective business models for mHealth, the answers are complex, multi-faceted and require organizations from different industries to collaborate and align themselves with current policy and regulatory guidelines. Topics in this category will focus on moving the debate forward by addressing the business models that impact mHealth with a focus on lessons-learned, best practices, and the emergence of commercially viable models to scale mHealth globally.
Policy Track: Healthcare, technology, and investment communities are seeking regulatory clarity on wireless medical technologies to accelerate this promising engine of healthcare innovation. Both the promise of the future and the concerns of the present exist: regulation of non-medical devices such as smartphones, national regulatory agencies broad jurisdiction over all healthcare information technology, and other topics that take center stage to this debate.
