Survey: Most organizations say small fraction of patients are highly engaged

Patient engagement can lead to better clinical outcomes, but organizations continue to struggle with getting patients highly engaged. According to an NEJM Catalyst survey of 340 hospital and healthcare executives, clinicians and clinical leaders, less than a quarter of their patients were highly engaged in decisions regarding the care they receive, and more than 70 percent of the respondents said less than half of their patients were highly engaged. "These results highlight the challenges in front of us; while having patients who are engaged with their health and with the health system is important, low rates of engagement appear to be the norm," wrote the authors of the study, Kevin Volpp M.D., of the University of Pennsylvania and Namita S.
