Mercy Medical uses ex-grocery stores to build primary care network

Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore is revamping old grocery stores into community health centers that will serve as patient-centered medical homes under health reform, reports the Baltimore Business Journal. In April, Mercy plans to open Lutherville Personal Physicians in a 40,000-square-foot former Giant Food store. The new center will provide space for 15 physicians and be able to serve 120,000 patients a year. A similar center operating in Overlea handles 100,000 patients annually. Mercy is already developing plans to launch five additional centers over the next five years. Why use former grocery stores? "We go where we can organize a critical mass of primary care services," said Dr. George Lowe, medical director for the project. Article
