Hospital boards should put more focus on patient safety

Although hospital boards understand finances, a leading patient safety expert says they lack education about safety issues. Tejal Gandhi, M.D., chief executive officer of the National Patient Safety Foundation told FierceHealthcare that "safety is everyone's job, but leadership sets the tone. And by leaders, I'm not just talking about the CEO. I mean the chiefs, vice presidents and the board level. To me it's really important that boards are engaged on this." Gandhi suggested that hospital leaders educate their board members on safety, study what other organizations are doing and perhaps begin each meeting with a patient story of a near miss or an adverse event.
