SPOTLIGHT: Reasonable expectations for EMRs

With all the rhetoric, vitriol and polemic being bandied about, we really can't have enough reality checks when it comes to healthcare reform. In that spirit, FierceHealthIT editor Anne Zieger cautions President Obama against thinking that a rah-rah spirit and 30-some-odd billion dollars of EMR investment (the familiar $19 billion figure is actually a net budget estimate based on expected savings) can bring true, coast-to-coast interoperability to a fragmented industry in a few short years. "With all due respect, Mr. President, the idea that healthcare can just be nudged into national health data networking in a few short years is so flawed it's almost comical," writes Zieger, an admitted fan of Obama.
