Marjorie Bessel, MD, is Chief Clinical Officer at Phoenix-based Banner Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems. Since joining Banner over a decade ago, she has served in progressive physician leadership positions. Initially she was chief medical officer for several Banner hospitals, then became its Arizona Division chief medical officer, before accepting vice president roles for Continuum Management and Clinical Integration. Most recently she was vice president/chief medical officer for Community Delivery. Her clinical background is as a hospitalist.
The issue that Dr. Bessel has made her top priority is fighting physician burnout. She is leading a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach—Cultivating Happiness in Medicine—to support physician well-being across the Banner system.
Dr. Bessel holds a faculty position with the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. She earned her MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, where she also served as Chief Resident.
