Lancaster Pollard has just released a 2010 guide to help hospitals and hospital reporters understand financing options for new construction, renovation, refinancing or acquisitions. It includes discussion on the impact of market shifts on access to capital, the role of a hospital's credit profile, and detailed discussions of both conventional and unconventional financing options.

Hospitals have only until the end of the year to pursue financing for capital projects that was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. After December, several options to pay for modernizations such as renovation and construction will expire. With the long lead time on projects, hospitals that aren't already aware of these options may not be able to use them. Further, some elements of the financing landscape have changed dramatically in the last year - bond insurance is less available, and federal mortgage insurance can now be used to refinance where it couldn't before.
