UPMC weighs start-up investments

Buoyed by the success of its start ups, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is considering expanding its portfolio of small companies pursuing promising medical technologies. IT: Philips to acquire Stentor for $280M

Dutch consumer giant Royal Philips Electronics said it will pay $280 million to acquire Stentor, a California-based medical imaging start-up. The deal gives an immediate shot in the arm to the healthcare IT unit of Philips Medical Systems. Stentor's picture archiving and communication system (PACS) technology is highly regarded for its speed in transmitting digital images. $45 million from the transaction goes to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which initially developed the …

UPMC says no to Las Vegas plan

Officials at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said they aren't happy with a proposal which would require the healthcare system to contribute $150 million towards the construction of a new academic medical center in Las Vegas. The news follows an estimate by Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor James E. Rogers that the total cost of the facility will probably be about $400 million. UPMC signs Oncology deal with Whitfield clinic

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is turning to the international healthcare market. UPMC's latest move has it running oncology services at a new state of the art hospital in Whitfield, Ireland. Under the terms of the deal, UPMC Cancer Center will share the costs of operating the 150,000-sq.ft. facility and split revenues. UPMC deal won't hurt Cerner

Many people have been wondering what the impact of IBM's deal with UPMC would be on its largest established rival, Kansas City's Cerner. It turns out that for now at least the answer is none -- or at least not very much.
