Dutch consumer giant Royal Philips Electronics said it will pay $280 million to acquire Stentor, a California-based medical imaging start-up. The deal gives an immediate shot in the arm to the healthcare IT unit of Philips Medical Systems. Officials at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said they aren't happy with a proposal which would require the healthcare system to contribute $150 million towards the construction of a new academic medical center in Las Vegas. UPMC's latest move has it running oncology services at a new state of the art hospital in Whitfield, Ireland. Many people have been wondering what the impact of IBM's deal with UPMC would be on its largest established rival, Kansas City's Cerner.
