State auditor to study Iowa IT break-in

Iowa state officials are looking further into the source of a recent break in to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics IT system. The school apparently believes that it was a university employee who broke into the school's system.  In the wake of this incident, however, UIHC believes that it needs to the take stronger measures to prevent this from happening again. Study: US providers lag in evening care, IT use

A new study comparing care trends in seven countries suggests that U.S. providers are behind on several measures of business and clinical efficiency, including technology adoption, after-hours availability and chronic disease management. McKesson acquires RelayHealth

There was a big healthcare IT deal in the Bay area today as McKesson announced that it has bought RelayHealth. The company is probably best known for WebVisits, popular software that allows patients to exchange messages with providers over a secure internet connection. Providers who use RelayHealth's system typically bill patients for an "online consultation" or e-consult, allowing them to seek reimbursement from insurers.

San Diego: Heart attacks only to cath-lab hospitals?

San Diego is considering a new system that would require ambulances to take patients experiencing serious heart attacks only to hospitals that have catheterization labs on site to insure that potentially-life saving treatment is given quickly. Currently, all but two of San Diego County's hospitals are failing to get patients into the cath lab within 90 minutes, which considered the standard by most experts.

Senate report raises questions about QIOs

The government's system of investigating complaints related to Medicare is "broken" and of "no help" for improving care quality, an investigation by the Senate Finance Committee found. Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) sent a letter to senior Medicare officials on Monday recommending major reforms to the program. HIMSS: A view from the floor

HIMSS appears to be getting bigger and bigger. There are 23,500 people here and over 800 exhibitors, but segregation is the watchword. The big guys are downstairs in the main exhibit hall, while the smaller companies are in an upstairs gulag. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation is running one of the more successful personal health record pilots in the country. PAMF says it has signed up 54,000 people to use it's system--impressive numbers indeed.
