Calif. nursing shortage looms

It's hardly surprising, but still sobering. According to new state projections, California could see a shortfall of 12,000 full-time registered nurses over the next seven years if things don't change. This is, in part, because there are far fewer slots in nursing schools than there are interested applicants. Mentors dramatically improve nurse retention

Sometimes, it seems, having someone take an interest makes all of the difference. Despite an array of forces prompting high nurse turnover, a new pilot program has found that nurses are seven times more likely to stay on the job if they're properly mentored. Study: Nursing shortage gap closing

According to a new study, the shortage of nurses shrunk by 420,000 registered nurses. This means there is still a gap of 340,000 nurses, which is significantly less than the 760,000 originally projected. The study found that 80 percent of new nurses chose the job after leaving a career in another field. These nurses are in their late 20s and early 30s, rather than their early 20s. Detroit nurses file $340M lawsuit

In Detroit, thousands of nurses have filed a $340 million lawsuit against six area hospitals alleging that, by discussing what they paid nurses, the hospitals conspired to suppress registered nurses' wages. This, in turn, contributed to nursing shortages in the area. An attorney representing the nurses said that on average, they were underpaid by $5,000 per year.
