King-Harbor restructuring in jeopardy
When Harbor-UCLA Medical Center took over operations of troubled Los Angeles hospital King-Drew, the idea was that Harbor would purge much of the facility's staff and upgrade their skills. However, it appears this isn't happening, despite the fact that the hospital promised these changes to CMS after it threatened to pull its accreditation. Yesterday, county health officials told the Board of Supervisors that they had only reassigned one-third of the hospital's 1,200 employees. For …

It's hardly surprising, but still sobering. According to new state projections, California could see a shortfall of 12,000 full-time registered nurses over the next seven years if things don't change. This is, in part, because there are far fewer slots in nursing schools than there are interested applicants. Last year, only 11,000 out of 28,410 applicants were accepted into the state's nursing programs. What's more, those that enter the programs often drop out. In fact, a full 25 percent …

Sometimes, it seems, having someone take an interest makes all of the difference. Despite an array of forces prompting high nurse turnover, a new pilot program has found that nurses are seven times more likely to stay on the job if they're properly mentored. The study drew on data from the California Nurses Association (CNA), which has been running a mentoring program at seven California hospitals. Mentors involved in the program are asked to complete a three-day class, then meet with …

According to a new study, the shortage of nurses shrunk by 420,000 registered nurses. This means there is still a gap of 340,000 nurses, which is significantly less than the 760,000 originally projected. The study found that 80 percent of new nurses chose the job after leaving a career in another field. These nurses are in their late 20s and early 30s, rather than their early 20s. But despite a surge in registered nurses, the shortage still promises to cause problems for the healthcare …

In Detroit, thousands of nurses have filed a $340 million lawsuit against six area hospitals alleging that, by discussing what they paid nurses, the hospitals conspired to suppress registered nurses' wages. This, in turn, contributed to nursing shortages in the area. An attorney representing the nurses said that on average, they were underpaid by $5,000 per year. The suit has been filed against the Henry Ford Health System, Detroit Medical Center (DMC), McLaren Health Care, Oakwood …

According to a new Harvard Medical School analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, patients are more likely to receive high quality care in not-for profit hospitals, at least when it comes to three common conditions. Having more registered nurses, more advanced technology and federal/military designation all have an impact on care quality, too, researchers found. To conduct the study, researchers analyzed how hospitals treated congestive heart failure, acute …

Getting regular calls from a nurse on how to handle your diabetes or heart condition might sound like a hassle. But for many patients, it's turning out to be a helpful and reassuring adjunct to their existing care routine. Employers like UPS are hiring health professionals, particularly registered nurses, to touch base regularly with employees and coach them on how to manage chronic illnesses, address health concerns like weight loss or even answer insurance coverage question. Some plans …
