CMS to fund program for at-home care

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the federal government will announce a $1.75 billion program designed to give some Medicare beneficiaries at-home care rather than treating treatment in nursing homes. Long-term care makes up a third of all Medicaid spending and home-based care often costs less than putting a patient in a nursing home. GAO: Disaster plans needed for nursing homes

A GAO report has found that the National Disaster Medical System doesn't adequately plan for transporting nursing home patients. Though it's a task that's left primarily to local officials, federal aid may be needed if they become overwhelmed. Nurses file suit against Beverly Health

Three Fayette County nurses have fired a wrongful termination suit against Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Services, a provider that operates 354 nursing homes and 18 assisted living facilities in the U.S. The suit also names RN Jean Lavender, the director of nursing services in one of Beverly's West Virginia homes, as a defendant. Better nursing home care cuts hospitalizations
