SPOTLIGHT: Romney vetoes Plan B legislation


Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has vetoed a bill which would have given women in his state easier access to the controversial "Morning After" pill. The bill would have given the Plan B contraceptive near over-the-counter status, allowing pharmacists to dispense it without a prescription. However, the bill passed with veto-proof majorities, so it will likely become law anyway. Dems introduce 'Wal-Mart' bill

Democratic Senators Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and John Corzine (D-NJ) introduced legislation yesterday which would require states to report the names of companies which have 50 or more employees receiving government subsidized healthcare. The legislation specifically targets large employers like Wal-Mart, who have drawn heavy criticism from some observers recently for failing to provide benefits for their workers. Suk to open stem cell bank; Conn., Mass. pass legislation

In South Korea, pioneering geneticist Hwang Woo Suk of the University of Seoul announced plans to open a World Stem Cell Bank by the end of the year. The bank would serve as a repository for current stem cell lines, allowing medical researchers to access cells that match patient's immune systems. Hwang told the Associated Press the effort should be an international project.
