Insurance-free CA hospital empire keeps growing
A maverick California cardiologist continues to expand his burgeoning hospital empire, which now stands to challenge some of the biggest chains in the state. While the rapid pace of his acquisition is drawing attention--he's acquired six hospitals during the past year alone--what's really got the industry buzzing is the fact he's canceling all of the hospitals' contracts with health insurance plans.

SPOTLIGHT: Specialty hospitals pose "little threat"
Two new reports were released assessing the impact of specialty hospitals on the healthcare market. CMS concludes that specialty hospitals "deliver efficient, high-quality services" but wonders if some providers may be avoiding their obligation to provide charity care. The GAO report notes that specialty players have a mixed impact on their general competitors, arguing that the evidence does not support the view that specialty competition encourages "existing hospitals to adopt changes that make them more efficient and better able to compete." Trend: Webcasting is hot at hospitals
The Houston Chronicle studies the increasing popularity of webcasting among hospitals, looking at the success of programs at Texas Medical Center and Memorial Hermann. Supporters note that webcasts of surgical procedures both help market a hospital's services and educate patients. This is a hot area. Astute FierceHealthcare readers will remember that last year we profiled SLP3D, a company that specializes in producing webcasts for the healthcare market and the name behind …
