Retail clinics already on the rocks?

In a recent post on industry blog Hospital Impact, Tony Chen argues, rather convincingly, that the buzz about the prospects for retail clinics may be overblown. SPOTLIGHT: Specialty hospitals pose "little threat"

Two new reports were released assessing the impact of specialty hospitals on the healthcare market. CMS concludes that specialty hospitals "deliver efficient, high-quality services" but wonders if some providers may be avoiding their obligation to provide charity care. The GAO report notes that specialty players have a mixed impact on their general competitors, arguing that the evidence does not support the view that specialty competition encourages "existing hospitals to adopt changes that make them more efficient and better able to compete." Cleveland Clinic plans Canadian venture

With the Canadian healthcare market warming to private care, the Cleveland Clinic is among the providers testing the waters north of the border with a new venture calculated to attract patients who want quick access to a specialist. Cleveland Clinic Canada, a joint-partnership with the Copeland Group, will operate out of a 25,000 square foot office in Toronto.
