UMDNJ faces corruption fallout

Officials at the state's University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) continue to struggle with the fallout from a massive corruption scandal. Scrushy ordered to repay $51.5M

Last year former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy avoided a conviction related to HealthSouth's $2.64 billion fraud scandal. But as a result of the accounting irregularities, Scrushy walked off with $47.8 million in bonus payments. Now the Alabama Supreme Court has upheld an order requiring him to repay the company $51.5 million--the bonus payment plus interest totaling $15,500 a day. St. Barnabas to pay $265M for Medicare fraud

St. Barnabas Health System, the largest healthcare network in New Jersey, has agreed to pay a $265 million settlement to resolve fraud charges brought by federal prosecutors. Ex-HealthSouth CEO Robert Scrushy has filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming he was wrongly terminated. The Justice Department said that British pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline has agreed to pay a $150 million fine to settle fraud charges stemming from its pricing and marketing of two antinausea drugs. The company is accused of inflating the prices it charged Medicaid and Medicare programs for Zofran and Kytril. The two drugs are commonly used to combat nausea caused by radiation treatments. story
