SPOTLIGHT: How to succeed with EHRs
Not sure your physicians will buy in to your EHR rollout? It's a reasonable fear. After all, they may not feel ready for the changes EHRs will require them to make. Survey: Health IT on the rise in hospitals
A new survey of 1,500 community hospitals conducted by the American Hospital Association has found that, despite barriers such as cost and integration, implementation of health IT is on the rise in hospitals. Nearly half of all surveyed hospitals reported moderate or high use of health IT in 2006, compared to a response of 37 percent in 2005. Large, urban and teaching hospitals are at the forefront of this movement. In addition:

SPOTLIGHT: UPMC rolls out CPOE system, critics watch closely
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center health system is rolling out a new CPOE system at one of its hospitals despite a study last year that found that found unexpectedly negative side effects of an earlier rollout at Children's Hospital. Dr. Eugene Wiener said, "I don't believe a single patient died because of this, and all of our data show that medication errors significantly decreased each year after implementing the system." No word on exactly what is going on, but Trinity says the pause is so the system can study the project's impact on "clinical processes for disease conditions." Says PR guy Kevin DiCola, "we'll be so much better with our implementation by taking a step …

A new study examines the way physicians use clinical decision support systems, looking at the factors which cause them to ignore system alarms and prompts. The research, which appears in BioMedCentral and Medical Informatics, concludes that most doctors welcome the technology, albeit with some reservations. About 80 percent, however, say they tend to ignore alarms when they are in a hurry.

Friday the thirteenth may be a good day to talk about mistakes. The title of the 1999 IOM report on medical errors reminds me of a joke--"to err is human, but to really foul things up takes a computer." This month we have news of two national-scale IT implementations with significant problems. The first is the Medicare Part D system where needed coverage and benefit information …
