WHO releases international antibiotic resistance plan

The World Health Organization (WHO) has unveiled a new strategy to tackle the global issue of antibiotic resistance. The organization noted that treatable infections now kill 25,000 people a year in Europe, and pathogens that cause tuberculosis and malaria are evolving beyond currently available treatments. The WHO's plan calls for every country to implement an antibiotic resistance monitoring system by 2017, as well as investing in new treatments and reducing use and misuse of antibiotics in agricultural and healthcare settings.
