UPMC outpatient demand surges 10 percent

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will add another 558 new full-time jobs through next June bringing the total added for FY2011 to 815, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times.

"It's supporting the expansion of business," Robert DeMichiei, SVP an CFO, says. "We do this very judiciously so we're adequately staffed."

The new positions will include 430 jobs for doctors in hospitals, senior living centers and home care services. Another 270 new jobs will staff the insurance division, which will roll out new dental and vision products in January. Forty positions will staff the system's international operations in western Pennsylvania.

The announcement came as the medical center touted its first quarter performance. First quarter operating revenues grew by $77 million to $2.1 billion, with a profit of $93 million from July through October, up $28 million from the same quarter last year.

According to the financials, two main areas of growth were outpatient revenue and physician services revenue, which both were up 10 percent for the first first quarter of FY2011. And enrollment in UPMC's insurance plans grew 5 percent, to more than 1.5 million members. The number of employed physicians grew 3 percent to 2,789. Total admissions and observations for Q1 were up 1 percent compared to a year ago.

UPMC's operating revenue has increased by 41 percent since 2007. The medical center operates an $8 billion business and employs some 50,000 people.
