UC Davis gets $100M nursing school donation

The state of California's nursing shortage may become a bit less acute in future years, thanks to a $100 million donation to the University of California Davis. The gift, which comes from a foundation started by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore and his wife Betty, is earmarked to help UC Davis create a nursing school. The gift will be allocated over 11 years, including a first-year grant of $21.2 million intended to help the school recruit key personnel, develop its curriculum, sell the program to prospective students and prepare to raise additional funds.

This donation, the largest in the nation to support nursing education, should allow the university to launch the school in the fall of 2008. Once in operation, the school will serve 456 students. It will begin by offering master's and doctorate degrees, and will phase in its undergraduate program in 2010.
