Despite a harsh economic climate, the hospital continues to expand and upgrade. In September 2009, it opened a fourth and fifth floor clinical unit that brought the number of private inpatient rooms to 143. The fifth floor's cardiac unit offers an intermediate care unit for patients who require heart monitoring, more frequent blood pressure monitoring, and/or specialized therapies or drugs.
In late 2009, the Women's Imaging Center at Piedmont Fayette Hospital expanded its breast health services to include Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM), which allows doctors to review images while the patient is still in the exam room.
In March 2010, the hospital added interventional cardiology services, offering non-surgical procedures to treat cardiovascular disease. More recently, in July 2010, the Piedmont Fayette Hospital Cancer Center opened. In August, the hospital became one of the 25 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. with a cancer program accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
