A last-minute amendment to a Tennessee law approved last year that gives hospitals a way to petition for court approval to discharge patients they say no longer need care is under fire, according to an article in USA Today. Rep. Andrew Farmer (R) sponsored the amendment, which was added to a bill meant to protect those placed in the care of conservators. The amendment has the support of various hospitals but was called into question after a homeless man died less than a month after being discharged last year. Hospitals filed 12 cases in Davidson County since the law went into effect July 1.
