Susquehanna Health in Central Pennsylvania has improved outcomes in numerous ways using data analytics, Lori Beucler, vice president and chief nursing officer at the health system, told Hospitals & Health Networks. System employees analyzed data for surprising trends and used their analytics to develop roadmaps for financial, operational and clinical improvements. Some of these reforms include improving pre-op wait times and developing a model that allowed patients' loved ones to remain with them during that stage; driving down costs, such as negotiating with vendors to save a projected $400,000 on orthopedic implants in 2015; and reducing waste by eliminating underused services, leading to a $100,000 annual savings in call coverage.
