Although legions of doctors have bristled at the physician rankings that are widely available online, most consumers in fact do not use the rankings when choosing a provider, medical facility or even an insurance carrier, for that matter. According to the results of a Harris Poll recently commissioned by the California Healthcare Foundation, most patients favor word-of-mouth recommendations to scorecards published on the Internet, which the American Medical Association opposes in some cases. Only 1 percent of surveyed respondents made a change in their hospital or health plan based on ratings sites. The survey found that consumers mainly use the Internet to learn more about specific diagnoses or symptoms. However, some clinicians don't believe that the survey results mean that providers and carriers should trivialize  evaluations posted on the Internet, recognizing that consumers may embrace online ratings in the near future.

Although this is a few months past the article being posted, I think the sites that rate MD's are more difficult to find that MD's might be worried needlessly, and the sites I have come across so far, can be confusing, so the doctor's don't need to worry. They need to separate the doctors from their office staff, as I have an excellent PCP, but a rude and abrupt staff member I have to deal with. I have even gone as far as filing a complaint against one of his Medical Assistants and the rudeness only increases. A bad Medical Assistant or should I say rude or abrupt one can cause patients to become more concerned about the overall care they will receive. I really like my PCP, but his one staff member needs the boot or a good talking to. I had two prescriptions that took four days for one and five for another to get refilled instead of the "normal" 24-48 hours. I was so upset I was going to have to their extended care clinic, as my three day emergency supply had got down to only two days.

How can patients separate the care from their PCP or Specialist they are receiving from the abrupt, rude or ignorant staff members?
