Here's a nasty fact to chew on: According to a study by Consumers Union, the U.S. has made little--if any--progress in reducing deaths caused by preventable medical harm over the past decade. The report gives the country a failing grade on following through on the recommendations made in a widely-read Institute of Medicine report from 1999, which calculated that at least 44,000 people were dying needlessly every year.
