SPOTLIGHT: Primary-care physicians overusing Pap smears
Several years ago, the guidelines for prescribing Pap smears were changed substantially, but it seems that many primary-care physicians still haven't caught up with the times. According to a new study, less than one-third of U.S. primary-care doctors follow the current guidelines, which are maintained by the American Cancer Society, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. In most cases, PCPs are prescribing Pap smears when they're not needed, researchers say. Article
