Cuba's doctor factory
Cuba has been producing physicians at a remarkable rate, even in contrast with the medical school-rich United States. In 2005, for example, there was one doctor for every 159 people in Cuba, versus one doctor for every 414 U.S. citizens. This large industry is fast becoming the country's largest money earner--and doctors its largest export--despite large-scale defections by physicians to better-paying positions in other countries.
