Hospitals preparing for potential violent scenarios can take several pointers from Scripps Health in San Diego's active shooter simulations, according to Becker's Hospital Review. The health system held its second such exercise Jan. 30 at its La Jolla, California, location. Scripps' Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Patty Skoglund, R.N., coordinated with fire and police officials, as well as other institutions such as emergency medical services and bomb/arson squads, to plan and design the drill. In addition to an active shooter scenario, the drill also trained participants to respond to four other violent events: a violent patient, a bomb threat, a hospital evacuation and a hostage situation. The drill had more than 300 participants, including 135 Scripps staff members and 170 external participants, according to the article.
