Readmissions drop among elderly patients following joint replacement surgery

A new report from the AARP finds a significant drop over a four-year period in the number of unplanned hospital readmissions following hip and knee replacement surgery among patients age 50 or older. The AARP attributed the decline to the success of the Medicare Hospital Readmission Reduction Program, which penalizes hospitals with excessive readmission rates for certain conditions. Report (.pdf)
