Although Latino immigrants say the quality and cost of healthcare is better in the United States than in the countries they came from, more than one in four report they have had serious trouble paying doctor and hospital bills and for prescription medicines, according to a recent NPR survey. Their biggest concern, however, is diabetes. Ten percent of Latino adults have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or "prediabetes," a stage that often goes undetected. Anne Peters, director of a diabetes program at Edward Roybal Comprehensive Health Center in Los Angeles, told NPR's health blog that the disease is the "plague" of the Latino community she treats.
