Philadelphia launches unique program to reduce infant mortality rate

Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia has introduced a new program aimed to promote safe newborn sleep, according to NJ.com. The "Baby Box" distribution program, one of the first distribution programs in the country, provides new mothers with essential baby needs, including a bassinet with a sheet and mattress, fleece and cotton clothing, a baby book, diapers, a thermometer, nasal aspirator, baby wash and essential education and resource information. North Philadelphia has a high infant mortality rate, hospital officials told the publication, and many young mothers don't have the resources they need to properly care for their babies. The program was first introduced in Finland, which had a high infant mortality rate in the 1930s. Since the country introduced a similar program, the mortality rate has continued to drop. Article
