Pediatric ER seeks to limit stressors for autistic patients

A pilot program at an Orlando, Florida, hospital aims at reducing autistic children's stress during visits to the emergency room, according to Bay News 9. Nemours Children's Hospital, mindful of the potential for overwhelming sensory overload in an ER environment, offers separate waiting or play areas, as well as headphones and sensory tools to help children center themselves. The hospital is also training frontline staffers to cut down on unnecessary monitors or personnel present in the room while expediting tests, medications and consults. In Wilmington, Delaware, the facility's sister hospital, Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, is planning a similar pilot program. Article
