PA hospital faces federal investigation over claims

A Pittsburgh-area hospital has become the subject of an investigation by two federal entities for "potentially erroneous evaluation and management claims," according to documents released by the hospital's parent company, the West Penn Allegheny Health System.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the inspector general's office for HHS has told the hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital--Forbes Regional Campus, that the investigation is ongoing.

WPAHS was already under informal investigation by the SEC last year after it made an erroneous $73 million write-down last year, largely due to an inaccurate projection of anticipated patient revenue. Now, the SEC investigation has been formalized, a step the hospital attributes to the agency's new administration and roll out of of new administrative guidelines.
