Provider network saves $1.25M in energy costs through online exchange

Adventist HealthCare, a nonprofit provider network with seven facilities throughout Maryland and New Jersey, is keeping the planet and its wallet greener by participating in an online energy auction over the World Energy Exchange, operated by World Energy Solutions, Inc., an operator of online exchanges for energy and green commodities.

By locking in low rates through mid-2013, Adventist expects to slash its energy costs by a whopping $1.25 million. At the same time, Adventist's purchase of 10 percent green energy will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 4,100 each year-roughly equivalent to removing 784 passenger vehicles from the road, according to the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.

Adventist also credits consultancy The Walker Group with helping it better manage its energy portfolio by identifying hidden costs in its current contracts.

"The money we have saved with World Energy will help us invest in long-term energy efficiency initiatives while advancing our overall mission of providing quality care to our patients," William G. "Bill" Robertson, Adventist president and CEO, said.
