New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) has nearly 250 criminal investigations of public hospitals under review, according to the New York Daily News. Freedom of Information Law requests found 238 open "serious criminality or misconduct" cases, some of which are more than a decade old. The crimes under investigation include bid-rigging, sexual abuse and theft of drugs and medical equipment. Between December 2013 and May 2014, hospital investigators closed only 27 cases. "That's a ridiculously low number," retired HHC investigator Jerry Brienza told the Daily News. "What are they doing with the other cases? Why are they not being investigated?" The HHC's inspector general reports directly to its president rather than the city's Department of Investigation, which Luizette Corchado, another retired investigator, called a conflict of interest.
