More uninsured likely as COBRA subsidy expires

Today is a difficult day for many Americans who have been laid off but were maintaining health coverage through their employers. This is the last day, at least for now, that the federal government will subsidize COBRA premiums.

Under a $25 billion program kicked off by the stimulus package, the federal government has been covering 65 percent of premiums for people who access COBRA coverage. COBRA premiums are unaffordable for many Americans without subsidies, as they average $1,069 per month, observers say.

Congress is considering legislation that would extend the subsidy to 15 months (it's currently limited to six). And some Senate Democrats want to push the expiration date to next June and increase the subsidy to 75 percent. However, it's not clear when these measures will come to a vote.

I am on a Cobra insurance plan which will only last till march I previosly was approved for the subsdidy and the company I was with got bought out and now their denying me. I am high risk because I have many medical problems and can't be insured by any other company. Without the subsdidy my insurance cost $1045 a month. Any suggestions? I think our insurance market is ridiculous.

Bad timing, Deborah. The national elections were over a month ago, and there's nothing until next November (House and Senate seats all over).
Until then, there's the general healthcare bill debate. Regardless of what finally comes out as law, we won't see it go live until the Spring,if then. Our Senators and Congressmen will not even begin to acknowledge our existence until about August of 2010 at this point.
Any chance of getting coverage under your state's Medicaid program, or contacting a social worker at your nearest large municipal or teaching hospital to see if there are any other state programs you might be eligible for?
If you were foolish enough to have some savings, or to own a house and be above water on your mortgage, or own an IRA or a 401-K, you are basically toast. Sorry.

Thx for your excellent article. Very informative. Finding a cure through medication
would be helpful, but as you know, a lot could be done by all of us thru proper diet and
exercise. Self discipline however can be tough. But if circumstances exist whereby
medication is needed, I wanted to possible help some people out there by letting them
know about a site that few people know about, but can help greatly in paying less for all
their medications, diabetes
included. I have known as least 10 people it has helped, some diabetic, some with other
prescriptions they get, and hopefully this will help get the word out. The site is
www.medpap.ws and tho it's "free," the "catch" is that they want you
in their store hoping you will impulse shop and pick up other items while you are there.
One of the oldest marketing ploys in the world, but if you can just use the card....enjoy
the savings, and don't buy anything else you don't truly need, you will beat the system.
There also is a short 1 minute video to explain how it works. It is a good program that
saves you money so I hope u take advantage of it. Take care and hopefully great health
will be a reality for all of us one day.
