Minneapolis medical center takes design cues from Apple stores

A Minneapolis medical center has looked to an unlikely source for architectural inspiration: Apple. The University of Minnesota Health Clinics and Surgery Center opened earlier this year, and its open floor plan and glass walls were inspired by the design of Apple stores. There are no lines or intake desks at the front of the center, but visitors are instead met with concierges at the door. Appointment information is also available online for patients to monitor. Officials expect that the modern touches will lead to more satisfied patients and a more efficient staff, all in a smaller design footprint than many other academic medical centers with similar patient and staffing numbers. The center cost about $165 million to build, and its chief operating officer, Mary Johnson, told STAT that the decision to go with a more modern design was a "really big risk." Article
