The most common form of compensation for on-call physicians is a daily stipend. However, according to new research from Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE), daily stipends can vary widely.
For example, the median on-call daily stipends for general surgeons ranged between $500 in the Midwest to $1,000 in the West, according to an association statement.
"On-call pay continues to be a material and growing investment for many hospitals and health systems," Steven Strode, national survey advisory committee member at MGMA-ACMPE, said. Payment varies, depending on the type of call, the frequency of contact, the supply of providers, and the individual market, Strode explained.
According to the data, the median daily stipend for days on call was the following for each specialty:
- Neurological surgery - $1,740
- Anesthesiology - $1,500
- Internal medicine - $1,000
- Orthopedic - $854
- Noninvasive cardiology - $650
- Hospitalist - $234
- Family medicine (without OB) - $100
