IT: The Personal Health Record - more harm than good

American Medical News takes a look at the phenomenon of the personal health record and the growing disagreement about what one should look like. What exactly is a PHR? That depends on who you're talking to. Hospitals, vendors and patients have very different takes on the subject. American Medical News examines each perspective. Commercially available products already let patients assemble information on their own medical histories online, but some physicians worry that putting patients in charge could result in mistakes which would make data unreliable. Is that simply the old bias of physicians against "uniformed" and "unreliable" patients resurfacing? In part, perhaps. On the other hand, we have a lot of recent evidence suggesting how much damage technology can do in the wrong hands.
