To tackle doctor shortages, some states have shifted their focus to increase the number of residency positions at hospitals in order to have more practicing physicians within their borders, according to Kaiser Health News. Currently, there is a disproportionately large number of medical students in the Northeast, while the rest of the country experiences a slow growth in residency positions. However, there is also a geographical disparity in the amount of residents exposed to rural healthcare needs.
