A new hospital licensing fee in Illinois will help the state create a healthcare reporting system, as well as improve hospital inspections, Crain's Chicago Business reported. The reporting system, which was created in 2005 but left unfunded for almost a decade, requires hospitals to report adverse events in order to identify patterns to improve healthcare. The $55 per patient bed fee will raise approximately $1.7 million each year for the state. More than half of the money the fee brings in will go toward the reporting system, while another 30 percent will be used to develop new quality and safety measures and the remainder will address patient complaints.
