How emergency docs can get the most out of information exchanges

Emergency physicians can use health information exchanges (HIEs) to develop more complete patient records, but only with significant practice and policy reforms, according a report from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). The report makes several recommendations for optimal HIE use, including: involving emergency physicians in federal and regional HIE activity; developing HIE policies with an eye toward best practices on liability protection; and standardized care protocols for integrating HIEs into emergency department electronic health records. ACEP also issued secondary recommendations, including more work at the national and regional level to improve patient matching as well as ensuring that exchanges present comprehensive but concise data.
