Hospital employment in August offers hope in job market

Although overall unemployment remained relatively unchanged in August at a steady 9.1 percent, the healthcare industry continued to add jobs with 30,000 additional jobs in the month, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data released on Friday.

Hospitals added about 8,000 jobs for a total of 4,760,600 jobs (seasonally adjusted) in August. Meanwhile, ambulatory healthcare services added more than 18,000 jobs for a total of 6,170,900 jobs (seasonally adjusted) in the month.

More specifically, a The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine report last week found that healthcare practitioners and technicians are in particular demand. There were 26,300 new job opportunities to total 513,700 last month.

Over the past 12 months, healthcare employment has grown by 306,000, according to the BLS press release.
