Hospital CEO study looks at healthcare industry trends

Deloitte released the results of its 2005 Hospital CEO survey. The study, which is the consultancy's 10th, gives an interesting snapshot of healthcare industry trends. Two-thirds of CEOs report that Medicare billing accounts for more than 40 percent of their revenues, with the numbers expected to increase as the Medicare-eligible population grows. Many CEOs are worried that increased dependence on Medicare could lead to new challenges (translation: risk of government intervention). Tellingly, most CEOs expect technology to increasingly shift care to the outpatient setting--a trend that some feel could eventually reduce demand for acute care services.

Talking Points: Nearly all of the CEOs surveyed say they think technology will increase demand for specialty/high-end services and for products and technologies that allow self-diagnosis.
