While politicians argue over the grand solution to health reform, HHS is taking a small step to help out in the meantime.

The agency has announced that it is offering $75 million in grants to states, targeting specific groups of uninsured citizens including children, seniors and small business employees. HHS is also offering $7 million to $10 million grants to states with broader coverage initiatives underway.

The grants are available for one year and will be extended for up to four years if HHS still has funds available. The deadline for application is June 15.

There is one catch, however. To be eligible for the grants, states must provide 20 percent in matching funds, though it's possible to have the match waived if the states show financial hardship.
