Health plans avoid covering weight loss treatments
Insurance companies may say they want you to be healthy, but they won't pay for the treatment that will help you, according to a Washington Post/Kaiser Health News article. It's a dilemma faced by millions of Americans says Dr. Jennifer S. Lee, an ER physician at George Washington University Hospital. One nonsensical example the article cites is the dilemma of a woman who couldn't afford her $800 monthly payments for a diet regimen, which the insurer wouldn't pay for. Yet, had she been 30 pounds heavier, the insurer would have paid for a $25,000 gastric bypass to shrink her stomach. Article
