Greater Newark hospitals have too many beds, duplications

Greater Newark area hospitals have a significant surplus of inpatient beds, according to a new study from Navigant Consulting, Inc. The excess exists in every inpatient bed type (pediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatry, and medical/surgical) and will likely continue to increase. In addition to surplus beds, the study found a substantial duplication of services in the study area, while unique services are lacking. The study, commissioned by the New Jersey Health Care Facilities Financing Authority, tracked healthcare services at 5 Newark hospitals. The study offers several recommendations to reposition, repurpose and transform the hospitals and address surplus capacity. Study (.pdf)
