Venice Regional Bayfront Health's response to a large sewage spill in the post-surgical orthopedic wing of the facility was inadequate, according to a report from the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration. The report does not list when the spill occurred but cited 13 violations of state and federal law in the hospital's response. Staff told the agency that they saw sewage leaking down the walls across from patient rooms and along both sides of the hallways by the elevators in front of the nurses' station. The leak was the result of staff flushing sanitary wipes, which caused a pipe to burst, the report said. But investigators said that the hospital failed to ensure the sewage was cleaned up properly and did not conduct an infection control risk assessment, a violation of state law and the hospital's own policy.
