A jury awarded $45.6 million to the parents of a Long Island man who was paralyzed and eventually died due to what his lawyers argue was a medical error on the part of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, the New York Times reports. Edward Beloyianis was paralyzed from the waist down at age 14 after doctors misplaced several screws during a November 2002 surgery to correct his scoliosis, his lawyer Evan Torgan argued during trial. Beloyianis died at age 22 due to what his lawyer called complications related to the paralysis.
