Family wins $45.6M in medical error suit against NewYork-Presbyterian

A jury awarded $45.6 million to the parents of a Long Island man who was paralyzed and eventually died due to what his lawyers argue was a medical error on the part of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, the New York Times reports. Edward Beloyianis was paralyzed from the waist down at age 14 after doctors misplaced several screws during a November 2002 surgery to correct his scoliosis, his lawyer Evan Torgan argued during trial. Beloyianis died at age 22 due to what his lawyer called complications related to the paralysis. The hospital plans to appeal the verdict, which it says "has no basis in law or fact," according to the Times. Article
