Fewer cases of Ebola have been reported in West Africa this past week, but the World Health Organization (WHO) said public health officials must continue to pursue efforts to curb the deadly virus. Since the outbreak began last year, WHO has confirmed 21,734 cases of Ebola and 8.641 deaths. The hardest hit country is Sierre Leone, which accounts for 117 of the 145 new confirmed cases. However, the agency said that cases continue to fall in that country, as well as in Guinea and Liberia. Meanwhile, the WHO's Emergency Committee on Ebola continues to advise that passengers be screened for signs of infection before leaving those three countries, Reuters reports. But additional measures, such as quarantines of returning travelers, impede the recruitment and return of international healthcare responders. Article
